Sweat it Out


Ever dreamed of being a ballerina? We have – and last year we signed up for a course at The Royal Ballet School.

Everybody Ballet was founded by former Royal Ballet dancer Isabel McMeekan to bring the best bits of classical ballet to the masses. In three locations across London – Notting Hill, Shepherd’s Bush and The Royal Ballet School itself in Covent Garden – McMeekan offers five- to six-week adult classes for beginners.

Each class begins on the floor with stretching and core-strengthening work (ballet is about power as well as grace). You then meet at the barre to practise your pliés and tendus and to finish move to the centre to work on your port de bras, sautés and what were, in our case, somewhat squiffy pirouettes.

Everybody Ballet helps to improve posture and increase flexibility, strength and balance. It didn’t exactly make us sweat – and, admittedly, we used to follow up our classes with a ’shroom burger and fries from Shake Shack – but it was fun and a nice alternative to the gym. Just bring a pair of ballet shoes. No previous experience (or pink tutu) needed.
