Time to Go Alfresco
Summer in New York is a challenge: it’s hot, sweaty, sticky and exhausting. The subway platforms are like saunas; stepping onto trains becomes a relief as the blasting air-con blows the dripping sweat away. How do we get through the steamy season? A glass of iced rosé is one solution and the free outdoor swimming pools another. But my preferred method is ice cream.
Head to Ample Hills Creamery in Gowanus, Brooklyn late on a summer night and there will be a line out the door. Kanye will be thumping through the speakers and everyone will be bopping as they wait. Who needs a bar when you have an ice cream parlor?
Choose a combination of the wacky flavors: It Came from Gowanus, Snap Mallow Pop, and Nonna D’s Oatmeal Lace are three of our favorites. Be sure to get them in a fancy chocolate-chip or salty pretzel cone (made in house, of course) then head up to the roof, where you can take a seat in a bright Adirondack chair and soak in the view of the Brooklyn rooftops.
Summer evening perfection. And don’t worry, it’s open until midnight for all your late-night ice cream needs.
