London may not be as iced-coffee crazy as New York but round about now, you’ll see plenty of caffeine on ice.
My favourite local dealer (we’re still talking beans) is Appestat. Tucked away off Islington’s busy Upper Street on cobbled Camden Passage, this café-cum-deli-cum-gallery is in good company: its neighbours include traditional Japanese tea house Katsute 100 and Austrian coffee house and restaurant Kipferl.
Coffee comes courtesy of east London’s Climpson & Sons. Order a velvety espresso or a foamy cappuccino and pull up a stool at the high table by the window: perfect for people watching. Or, if the sun’s shining, grab an iced latte to go and find a patch of grass on nearby Islington Green.
There’s also an all-day brunch menu – choose between the buttermilk pancakes with Chantilly cream and summer berry compote or the egg-and-sausage brioche roll – and an array of events, from supper clubs to exhibitions. Plus, if you want your coffee creamy as well as cold, go straight for the affogato.
