New York’s iced coffee obsession seems to have no relation to the seasons. But it’s only in these sweaty summer months that I join the gang.
Feed is Lauren Bush Lauren’s “social business”. It creates products under fair-labor conditions in communities in Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Kenya, Mexico and Peru. Through the sales of the products, the business provides meals to people in need in those same countries.
The recently opened Feed Shop & Café in Dumbo is the company’s first bricks-and-mortar location. It offers Feed products, as well as other “socially conscious finds”, alongside wonderful coffee from La Colombe and irresistible pastries from City Bakery.
Set back from the Brooklyn waterfront, a sign bearing the café’s slogan, “Good Coffee that Does Good”, entices you in. For every coffee or food item sold, one meal is donated. The more coffee you drink, the more you’re doing to help those in need. The number along the front of the counter updates itself with every purchase. Grab a seat in the beautiful greenery-filled café or, if it’s not too unbearably hot, take your iced latte and head out to the waterfront to enjoy your icy drink (and perhaps a pretzel croissant) with peace of mind, a stunning view and that much needed caffeine buzz.
