Hot Chocolate


On Wednesday 15 November, Somerset House opens its annual Christmas skating rink. At the same time, luxury London department store Fortnum & Mason takes over the neoclassical building’s west wing.

As others glide and galumph around the ice, you’ll find us curled up in Fortnum’s Lodge, cracking walnuts and peeling Clementines – both of which are part of the festive table decoration. This cosy café serves an array of delicious plates but we’re here for one thing only: the Chocolossus.

The Chocolossus (try to look past the fluffy name) is Fortnum’s “ultimate hot chocolate”, topped with a sprinkling of chocolate shavings and a swirl of whipped cream. The choice of chocolate is yours: smooth and sweet Columbian milk, 70 per cent Dominican Republic dark or silky white. Unlike most white hot chocolates, the latter is surprisingly non-sickly sweet, which conveniently leaves room for more sugar in the form of a marshmallow: salted caramel, mint choc chip, coconut, raspberry or vanilla. You can also “make it merry” by adding a shot, from toffee vodka to brandy.

Once you’ve had your fill, take a stroll around the Fortnum’s Christmas Arcade, a brightly lit labyrinth of rooms filled with festive gifts. If you fancy it, you can even take to the ice – we’ll just meet you back at the Lodge with a bottle of fizz.
